Peverley, Lopez Special Guests For Return Of Homecoming Weekend At SLU

CANTON - St. Lawrence University is bringing back Homecoming Weekend, and the community will have opportunities to meet two special alumni guests: Stanley Cup champion Rich Peverley '04, of the Boston Bruins, and Christian Lopez '10, who caught - and returned - Yankee Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit during the summer.

Homecoming will take place November 4 through 6 on campus, featuring a wide variety of events, including the traditional Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. In addition, the community is invited to celebrate Homecoming with the University.

On Friday, November 4, Peverley will meet fans and sign autographs from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. in the lobby of Appleton Arena. An all-campus pep rally will be held in Burkman Gymnasium from 6 to 6:30 p.m., with presentations from special guest speakers, some spirited competition and prizes. And at 7 p.m. in Appleton is the men's ice hockey game, with St. Lawrence facing Union. Peverley will drop the puck at the start of the first period and fans are encouraged to wear white SLU gear, for a "white-out" in the arena.

Tickets for the game are $7 for adult general admission; $5 for children, students and seniors (aged 62 and over); and $11 for reserved seats.

On Saturday, November 5, Lopez will serve as honorary captain of the St. Lawrence football team for its game versus the University of Rochester at 1 p.m., and provide color commentary on WPDM radio during the game at Leckonby Stadium.

The Homecoming Weekend schedule also includes tours, open houses, presentations and performances for visiting alumni. The complete schedule is available online.

Peverley was the leading scorer and captain on the 2003-04 SLU men's hockey team. He was on the Boston Bruins when they won the Stanley Cup in June, becoming the first St. Lawrence graduate to have his name etched on the Stanley Cup - emblematic of the NHL Championship - as a player. Peverley recently renewed his Bruins contract for three more years.

Lopez, a former football player at St. Lawrence, was launched into the national spotlight on July 9, when he caught Jeter's solo home run, also the baseball legend's 3,000th hit. Lopez immediately offered to return it to Jeter. For this he was rewarded by the Yankees, and now serves as a community activist for Modell's Sporting Goods. He was recently honored by the Huffington Post as a sports "Game-Changer," someone who positively changes a society and the way it looks at the world.
