ST. LAWRENCE HOLDING 'HOLES FOR HUMANITY' BENEFIT GOLF TOURNEY
CANTON - The St. Lawrence University chapter of Habitat for Humanity is holding a
four-person scramble golf tournament - called "Holes for Humanity" - to raise funds
for building materials needed to construct a home in Rensselaer Falls.
The tournament, open to the public, will be on Friday, June 2, with a shotgun start
at 2 p.m.; the event occurs during Alumni Reunion Weekend at St. Lawrence. In
conjunction with the tournament, a silent auction will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at the
St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club.
The entry fee, which includes a golf cart and "awards" ceremony, is $75 per person;
the registration deadline is Friday, May 26. Those interested in playing, but not
part of an organized foursome, will be assigned tournament partners.
The St. Lawrence chapter of Habitat for Humanity has worked for 12 years with its
local affiliate, Raquette Valley Habitat for Humanity, to build homes for those who
cannot afford them. For the past three years, students in the University's chapter
have been raising funds to build a house on their own. They have acquired a lot and
will perform the labor; the goal for the next stage of fund-raising is $40,000, to
purchase building supplies for the project.
Items and donations of cash are also being sought from businesses for the silent
auction, including furniture items, hotel and dining certificates, gift baskets,
art works, jewelry and wine. Golf-related items are especially welcome.
All inquiries regarding the auction and sign-up for the tournament should be
directed to Anne Townsend, project director of St. Lawrence's David Garner
Center for Collegiate Volunteerism and advisor to Habitat for Humanity; 315-229-5652;
