SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER UNABLE TO COME TO SLU

CANTON – St. Lawrence University Chaplain Kathleen Buckley has announced to 
the University community that due to unresolved immigration issues, the Reverend 
Desmond Hoffmeister will be unable to accept a two-year appointment as 
associate chaplain.
	Rev. Hoffmeister was expected to join the University community this 
summer, and have as his primary responsibility leading the weekly Progressive 
Multi-Racial Christian Service on campus. Rev. Buckley stated, "We will be 
exploring other possibilities, but the Progressive Christian Service will 
continue as planned, each Sunday at 5 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel."
	Rev. Hoffmeister is a native of Capetown, South Africa, and dedicated 
the first years of his career to the liberation movement in that country. He 
spent the past four years in the United States, as the as the Drexler 
Scholar-in-Residence at the American Baptist Seminary in Berkeley, California. 
Rev. Hoffmeister holds a licentiate in theology from the Baptist Theological 
College of Southern Africa and a Master of Divinity degree from the American 
Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley.
