Government Prof.: USA Resembles NCAA Tournament
Alan Draper, Michael W. Ranger ’80 and Virginia R. Ranger P’17 Professor in Government, told the Syracuse Post-Standard that the United States resembles the NCAA basketball tournament, where it's usually the same elite schools that end up in the Final Four.
Draper opined that the image of democracy where ordinary citizens contend over public policy is replaced by a more accurate version in which the elite compete only among themselves.
"The oligarchy of college basketball benefits from a virtuous circle in which winning brings exposure on television, which attracts donor support to pay for better facilities, which lures the next class of blue chip recruits, which, then produces more winning," Draper said. "The class structure reproduces itself on and off the court."
