A List 3/17/03 GRANT AWARDED TO SLU TO FUND CHEMISTRY RESEARCH BY STUDENTS CANTON - St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $15,000 grant by the Russell Pearce and Elizabeth Crimian Heuer Foundation to initiate the Heuer Research Fellows Program, supporting independent study by chemistry students. The summer research program sponsored by the Heuer Foundation grant will target first- and second-year students to offer increased opportunities for in-depth science research experiences at a time when students are exploring the potential to major in science. The Heuer Foundation grant will support students' research opportunities and travel costs to attend and present their research findings at the national American Chemical Society's annual meeting. The program will provide new opportunities for students to undertake summer research in chemistry and biochemistry, working with upper-class students when possible. It is expected that two Heuer Research Fellows will be selected this year. President Daniel F. Sullivan stated, "We are grateful to the Russell Pearce and Elizabeth Crimian Heuer Foundation for this grant, which will encourage greater research participation in the sciences at earlier stages in students' undergraduate careers. The best colleges, St. Lawrence among them, emphasize hands-on learning that gives students direct, first-hand experience with science as it happens in the real world. Creation of the Heuer Research Fellows Program allows us to increase the opportunities for students to have that experience." Heuer Foundation Trustee James Johnston, parent of St. Lawrence senior Elizabeth Johnston, added, "The Heuer Foundation is delighted to partner with St. Lawrence in its efforts to improve science education and to offer more students the opportunity to benefit from the increased experiential learning that takes place through collaborative research."-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
