SLU GALLERY EXHIBITS WORK OF 'HEAVENLY FRIENDS'
CANTON - "Heavenly Friends," an exhibition featuring artists from Asia and the
United States, will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence
University from Thursday, October 5, through Wednesday, November 1. The exhibition
is held in conjunction with the New York Conference of Asian Studies, being
held on campus October 6 through 8.
A slide lecture and discussion with exhibition curator Eric Nakamura and artist
Saelee Oh will be held on Monday, October 16, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the
Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the public, free of charge.
Nakamura, of Giant Robot magazine, states, "Most of the participants [in
the exhibition] already know or know of each other from working in the same
indie-minded art world. Some artists are just beginning to find an audience,
while others have international clients and patrons. These artists are young - all
are below their mid-30's and many are in their 20's - but their work is solid
and voices firm. Stylistically, their work blurs the lines between creating what
is appropriate for contemporary art galleries and taking on more commercial tasks.
Media are mixed and matched as well, including narrative illustration, traditional
painting, paper-cutting and wood sculpture, with the artwork providing the
opportunity for an open, accessible dialogue with viewers. In my mind, this is a
dream team."
