ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY AWARDED GRANT BY HEARST FOUNDATION
CANTON - The William Randolph Hearst Foundation has awarded St. Lawrence University
a grant of $500,000 for renovations and improvements to arts facilities in the
Noble Center on campus. In recognition, the center's new rehearsal and performance
studio will be named the William Randolph Hearst Studio.
In 2005, St. Lawrence completed the first of a multi-phase project to transform
its arts curriculum, supported by renovation and improvement in facilities for
fine arts, music, speech and theatre, and the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery.
The $1.2 million first phase also increases opportunities for faculty and
students across the arts disciplines to collaborate on work in new ways.
The $500,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation will help the
University move forward with the second phase of the project, which includes
equipping a state-of-the-art Center for Arts Technology with teaching labs, an
open computer lab, audio and video editing studios, and a showcase area.
"We are grateful for the ongoing support provided to St. Lawrence by the William
Randolph Hearst Foundation," President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "which will
have a profound and long-lasting impact on our students' education. With Hearst
Foundation support, the University moves further towards full implementation
of a facilities plan that is bringing our arts disciplines together in innovative
ways and providing students and faculty with increased and enhanced opportunities
to explore the intersection of the arts, creative expression and technology."
Previous grants to St. Lawrence by the Foundation in 1991 and 1996 established and
enhanced the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund for Native American
and North Country Students.
The charitable goals of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation reflect the
philanthropic interests of founder William Randolph Hearst: education, health,
social service and culture. Within these four areas, the Foundation assists
institutions in providing opportunities to underserved and underrepresented
populations.
