MIDDLE-EAST AMBASSADOR TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON - Hussein Hassouna, permanent representative of the League 
of Arab States to the United Nations and the United States, will 
give a talk on Middle-East politics on Monday, February 18, at 
8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre at St. Lawrence University. The event 
is open to the public, free of charge.
	Hassouna's diplomatic career began in 1971, when he was 
a member of the permanent mission of Egypt to the United Nations. 
Since that time, he has served as assistant minister of foreign 
affairs of Egypt for International Legal Affairs and Treaties; 
director of cabinet to the deputy prime minister and minister 
of foreign affairs in Egypt; director of the Egyptian press and 
information bureau; political consular for the Egyptian Embassy; 
and a member of the Egyptian delegation to successful Middle 
East negotiations in Cairo, Tel Aviv and Washington, D.C.
	In 1989, Hassouna became the ambassador of Egypt to 
Yugoslavia, and in 1992, he was appointed ambassador of Egypt 
to Morocco. He accepted his current position in 1997.
	Hassouna has been involved in countless diplomatic 
negotiations, as well as a contributor to the process that 
resulted in the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty.
