PRESIDENT SULLIVAN NAMED PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

CANTON - The Canton Rotary Club has named St. Lawrence University
President Daniel F. Sullivan its Paul Harris Fellow, the highest
honor accorded by the group. The award was given to Sullivan at
the Rotary Club's meeting on Monday, October 22.
Canton Rotary Club President Peter Van de Water read the
following as the award was presented:
"Dr. Daniel F. Sullivan, the Paul Harris Fellow is Rotary's
highest honor. It is Rotary's tribute to a person whose life
demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of Rotary.
"We do not honor you today because you were an outstanding
student, leader and athlete at St. Lawrence University. We do not
honor your academic leadership as dean of Carleton College or
president of Allegheny College. Your honor today has nothing to
do with your breathing new vitality into the buildings and spirit
of St. Lawrence University.
"No, today we honor you because you care about the
community of Canton. You were a worker on the team that designed
the Canton Community Action Plan; as a member of the Steering
Committee, you promoted the plan's implementation. You were the
inspiration for the Canton Initiative, which will funnel $2 million
in low-interest loans to Canton businesses. With your guidance,
St. Lawrence University has made generous gifts to the Canton
community, from Habitat for Humanity to the new Canton Fire
Station.
"You have carried forward the efforts begun by Rotary,
when our club contributed $10,000 towards revitalizing Canton's
downtown. You have embraced the notion that an attractive, healthy
Canton is essential to your college's high standing in the
academic world.
"It gives me great pleasure, Dan Sullivan, to present you
the three emblems of appreciation given to a Paul Harris Fellow -
certificate, medallion and pin. Please accept our congratulations
and sincere thanks."
Rotary Clubs that name a Paul Harris Fellow contribute to
the Rotary Foundation, which supports an array of programs that
aim to improve living conditions throughout the world. The recognition
is named for Chicago attorney Paul Harris, who founded Rotary
International in 1905.
