HARPSICHORDIST TO GIVE RECITAL AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Gavin Black, harpsichordist, will give a recital at
St. Lawrence University on Friday, April 14, at 8 p.m. in the
Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center.
Black, the James Hutchison visiting keyboardist for 2000,
will also give a workshop on Saturday, April 15, at 10 a.m. in Gilbert
Recital Hall. Both events are open to the public, free of charge.
The recital will include performances of works by Sweelinck,
Buxtehude, Bull, Frescobaldi, Storace and Cabanilles. The workshop
will be informal, with students playing for commentary and Black explaining
differences of three harpsichords available for participants to try.
Black teaches organ and harpsichord at Westminster Choir
College of Rider University and the Westminster Conservatory of Music
in Princeton, New Jersey. Known especially as a performer of 17th-century
keyboard repertoire, he has recorded the music of many composers for
PGM Recordings and has an upcoming release on Titanic Records. Black is
also an authority on the design and construction of baroque keyboard
instruments and has served as a consultant on several organ- and
harpsichord-building projects.
