Visiting Fulbright Scholar At SLU To Give Talk On Cyber Security
CANTON - Visiting Fulbright Scholar Harinda Vidanage will give a talk titled "Bioroid Century: Spectrum of Cyber Security and Its Illusions" on Tuesday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at St. Lawrence University, as part of the Contemporary Issues Forum. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Vidanage will discuss the implications for individual safety, given no clear solution and the complicated maze of ideas and theories emerging around the concept of cyber security. Most of the discussion focuses on network security, hardware security, critical infrastructure security or achieving military edge, with no consensus among academics, practitioners and policy-makers. At the same time, the cumulative threat emanating from cyberspace makes individual users more and more vulnerable to external manipulations.
A political scientist by training, Vidanage's research and publications have primarily been on politics of cyberspace, political activism using new media and cyber terrorism. He is also a political analyst on global political developments and their implications on Sri Lanka. As part of his Fulbright grant, he is leading a reading group among faculty members of St. Lawrence and surrounding universities on cyber cultures, cyber politics and cyber security.
