HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PHOTO EXHIBIT AT ST. LAWRENCE
CANTON - "Rebuilding Homes, Renewing Spirits," an exhibition of photographs portraying both
the loss and reconstruction efforts following the December, 2004, tsunami, will be in the
atrium of the Student Center at St. Lawrence University from Monday, November 28, through
Friday, December 9.
The exhibition is sponsored by the St. Lawrence University chapter of Habitat for
Humanity, in partnership with Raquette Valley Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for
Humanity International.
Nearly 1.8 million people lost their homes in the tsunami that hit Asia December 26,
2004. "Rebuilding Homes, Renewing Spirits" is a dramatic collection of photos taken by
Habitat for Humanity staff photographers from days following the tsunami throughout
the year. Habitat for Humanity responded immediately in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka
and Thailand, offering aid where it was needed and putting plans in place for long-term
reconstruction. Today, the organization is actively engaged in helping 25,000 families
get back into new homes and back on their feet.
St. Lawrence University Habitat for Humanity has been raising awareness and money in
the area to build a student-sponsored home, in partnership with other local chapters;
it is hoped that construction will begin in the spring. The annual Habitat spring-break
Collegiate Challenge trip will take place in Slidell, Louisiana, an area affected by
hurricanes. For information, contact Anne Townsend, 315-229-5652.
