A List 3/13/00 SLU STUDENTS HIT THE BEACH WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CANTON -- Fourteen St. Lawrence University students plan to spend their spring break in Myrtle Beach not partying on the sand, but helping area families. The students will build houses through Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge program, working with the Horrey County (South Carolina) Habitat for Humanity chapter March 12 through 18. In addition to donating time and energy to build houses, the students raised more than $2,100 for Horrey County to build the two homes they will construct, as well as future homes in the area. St. Lawrence chapter President Merinda Bobeck '02, of Northford, Connecticut, commented, "This will be a great opportunity to help a lot of people and have a lot of fun at the same time." Collegiate Challenge is a year-round program, coordinated through the campus chapters and youth program department at Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia. More than 8,500 students from more than 400 colleges, universities and high schools will work at more than 170 sites nation-wide during this year's spring break. Collectively, the students have pledged more than $800,000 for their affiliate partners.-30- Back To News Releases
