SLU EMERITUS PROFESSOR GUNNISON'S BOOK PUBLISHED

CANTON – Hypnocounseling: An Eclectic Bridge Between Milton Erickson and Carl
Rogers, by St. Lawrence University Emeritus Professor of Education Hugh
Gunnison Jr., has been published by PCCS Books of Ross-on-Wye, Wales, UK.
In the book, Gunnison explores the links between Ericksonian hypnotherapy
and Rogerian person-centered therapy. The merging of Rogerian and Ericksonian
psychotherapy is unique to the field, as is the link to nearly all of the
major psychotherapy methods. He calls this eclectic approach "hypnocounseling."
The book's chapters cover theory and practice, with two appendices containing
scripts for hypnocounseling strategies and a section by Rogers that discusses
Gunnison's hypnocounseling. The volume is intended for trainees and professional
practitioners in the mental health professions.
A 1952 graduate of St. Lawrence University, with a doctorate from Syracuse
University, Gunnison was named to emeritus status in 1992, after serving on the
faculty of St. Lawrence for 27 years. He represents the fourth generation of the
Gunnison family to attend St. Lawrence; his great-uncle, Almon Gunnison,
Theological School Class of 1868, was president of the University from 1899 to
1914.
Hugh Gunnison has spent the last 15 years integrating the work of Rogers
and Erickson; the result of that work is his current book. He has published
numerous articles, conducted workshops and given papers throughout the U.S., as well
as in the United Kingdom, Canada and Europe during his long career. Currently
Gunnison is in private practice in Canton with his wife, Patricia Gunnison. He will
conduct a workshop at Alfred University July 12 through 16 and additional workshops
are planned.
PCCS Books (www.pccs-books.co.uk) specializes in volumes on counseling and
psychotherapy, with a focus on the person-centered approach.
