TALK ON PEACE, JUSTICE SET AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON – The Most Reverend Thomas J. Gumbleton, auxiliary bishop of 
the Archdiocese of Detroit, Michigan, will speak on "Building Peace and 
Social Justice in Today's World" on Tuesday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. 
in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The event is 
open to the public, free of charge, and will be followed by an 
informal reception in Herring-Cole.
	Gumbleton serves as pastor of St. Leo Parish in Detroit and 
was the founding president of Pax Christi, U.S.A., a national 
organization that promotes Christian nonviolence. Gumbleton is also 
known for his role in developing the U.S. Catholic bishops' 1983 
pastoral letter on nuclear war and weapons. Ordained to the priesthood 
in 1956, Gumbleton has traveled on peace missions throughout the 
Middle East and South America. The recipient of numerous awards for 
his work in promoting peace and reconciliation, he was also president 
of Bread for the World, and founder and co-chair of Catholic Caucus 
of Southeast Michigan. Gumbleton holds a Doctor of Canon Law from 
Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
