EVENTS AT SLU FOCUS ON COPING WITH GRIEF

CANTON -- The holiday season can be difficult for those who have
experienced the death of someone they loved. College students may
have a special challenge, because if they have recently lost
someone close to them, it is likely to have been the first such
loss they have ever had.
Two upcoming events coordinated by the St. Lawrence
University Counseling Services office are designed to assist
those coping with grief during the upcoming holidays. Both are
open to all members of the community.
On Thursday, December 5, Maria Housden, the author of
Hannah's Gift: Lessons From A Life Fully Lived, will speak on
loss and grief at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.
In her book, Housden writes of the lessons she learned
from her daughter, Hannah, who died one month after her fourth
birthday, in her last year of life. She shares recollections and
anecdotes, recounting Hannah's battle with cancer and the way she
approached life with joy and courage. Housden has led bereavement
support groups and spoken to organizations across the nation as an
advocate for quality of life at the end of life.
An Evening Of Remembrance, a ritual created to honor and
remember friends and family members who have died, will be held
on Friday, December 6, beginning at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel. The event is coordinated by Associate Director of
Counseling Services Daniel Hernandez, a specialist in grief
therapy. Hernandez leads a student support group in living
with loss, as well as workshops on understanding grief and
grief in the workplace.
For more information about either event, contact
Hernandez at 315-229-5391.
