15 Percent Of Energy Purchased By SLU Is 'Renewable'
CANTON - St. Lawrence University has purchased 2,475 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable energy for the 2008-2009, or about 15 percent of its annual consumption. This purchase will provide 100 percent of the energy consumed in the Student Center and 50 percent of the energy consumed in the Johnson Hall of Science.
In 2007, St. Lawrence joined other American colleges and universities in committing to "carbon neutrality" in its campus operations, with President Daniel F. Sullivan signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. That commitment includes agreeing to purchase 15 percent of its electricity consumption as renewable energy. The University's purchase, from Juice Energy, is in the form of National Wind Renewable Energy Credits.
In addition, the purchase honors the University's commitment to purchase "green" energy equivalent to 50 percent of the annual consumption of Johnson Hall of Science, as part of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
In 2007-2008, the student government organization provided funds to purchase half of the electricity consumed in the Student Center as renewable energy. With the University's "green" energy purchase for this year, it will continue the students' initiative.
