SLU GREEKS ASSISTING COMMUNITY THROUGH SERVICE ACTIVITIES

CANTON -- From accompanying trick-or-treaters to collecting canned
food for local pantries, members of St. Lawrence University's fraternities
and sororities have been involved in a number of service activities to
benefit the community this fall.
Greek Community Service Week took place October 22-31. That week,
members of Phi Sigma Kappa and Phi Kappa Sigma fraternities and Kappa
Kappa Gamma and Chi Omega sororities collected some 1,300 cans of food to
be donated to area food banks. Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Pi fraternities and
Kappa Delta Sigma sorority held a walk-a-thon, with collected pledges of
about $350 donated to Renewal House.
At Halloween time, Delta Delta Delta sorority and Alpha Tau Omega
fraternity held a party with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, attended by about
100 local children. Additionally, 72 St. Lawrence students volunteered to
be a trick-or-treating safety patrol for the Canton Police Department,
assisting children in staying safe for the holiday.
A traditional community event undertaken by students will be held
November 17, when the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council
sponsor and host a Thanksgiving dinner for residents of the Canton United
Helpers Home and Riverside Apartments (Canton Housing Authority). Residents
will be brought to the Common Room of Sykes Residence Hall by students for
the event, for dinner and music by the Singing Sinners. Some 50 area
residents are expected to participate in the event, organized and run
completely by students, this year.
