CANTON - God's Ear, by Jenny Schwartz, will be presented at St. Lawrence University Wednesday through Saturday, March 31 through April 3, at 8 p.m. each evening in Gulick Theatre. Admission is free, and tickets are available at the door. However, seating for this production is limited, so obtaining tickets in advance of performances is encouraged. To reserve seats, call 315-229-5748 or visit the Gulick Box Office, open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 29, through Friday, April 2. The play is intended for mature audiences.
The production is directed by Associate Professor of Performance and Communication Arts Kirk Fuoss; Associate Professor of Performance and Communication Arts Randall Hill is assistant director.
God's Ear explores how a family deals with the loss of a 10-year-old in a drowning accident. Dad travels, drinks and carouses with women. Mom turns to pills and endless housecleaning to sidestep her grief. Their six-year-old daughter cries out for attention in streams of seemingly endless questions. And the Tooth Fairy and a G.I. Joe action figure come to life to offer consolation and advice.
Fuoss states, "What separates God's Ear, winner of the 2007 Susan Smith Blackburn Best New Play Award, from the many other plays dealing with family tragedies is Schwartz's refusal to let the subject matter result in a bleak and depressing theatre experience. Michael Stebbins, artistic director of Washington D.C.'s Repertory Theatre wrote, 'God's Ear is told with a poetic lyricism that is laugh-out-loud funny, deeply profound, and heartbreakingly true, and it's easy to see why it became the sleeper hit of the 2007 Off-Broadway season.'"
