AUTHOR NIKKI GIOVANNI PART OF SLU FAMILY WEEKEND

CANTON -- Author Nikki Giovanni will speak at St. Lawrence University
on Saturday, October 2, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre, as part of the
Family Weekend schedule of events.
Over the past 25 years, Giovanni's outspokenness, in her writing
and in person, has commanded the world's attention. Since 1968, she has
inspired readers and critics and has established herself as a best-selling
poet, author and essayist. In her lectures, she speaks with humor about
her life and the creativity in everyone's lives.
Giovanni's talks focus on the individual and the power one has to
make a difference. "Do something with your life!," she once told a college
audience. "You will find that what you have coveted is not worth
coveting...There is a limit to what material things can do."
Her books of poetry and essays include Black Feeling,
Black Talk/Black Judgment, The Women and the Men, Cotton Candy on a Rainy
Day, Those Who Ride the Night Winds and Sacred Cows and Other Edibles.
Giovanni's latest, Racism 101, includes bold, controversial essays about
the situation of Americans on all sides of the race issue.
Family Weekend will take place October 1-3 on campus, and includes
a variety of social, academic and athletic events for students and
their families.
