SLU EXHIBITION LOOKS AT GENETIC ENGINEERING CONCERNS

CANTON – "Formulated artifacts, animals and propaganda" make up the multimedia
displays of artist Kimberley Richards, whose work will be exhibited in the
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University September 26 through
November 1. "GeneCorp: Making the World a Better Place" is the exhibition
title; Richards will present a discussion on Monday, September 29, at 7 p.m.,
called "Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain." In addition, Richards
will be in the gallery Wednesday through Friday, September 24 through 26, for
an "on-site consultation," as "director of public relations for GeneCorp."
All events are open to the public, free of charge.
Of her work, Richards states, "I invite viewers to question ethical and
practical ideologies of biotechnology, while emphasizing how current 'breakthroughs'
will affect all of us in the future. Modeling my dioramas after those on
display in well-known natural history museums provides a more convincing,
authentic experience. It is my hope that gallery viewers will leave confused
about the path that is being set out before us by corporate science and technology.
The most important message my work delivers is that everything presented as
truth could be real – the technology does in fact exist. "
Richards earned her Master of Fine ats degree from the University of Colorado
at Boulder and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northern Michigan University.
She has been a faculty member at Florida Atlantic University, Davidson College in
North Carolina and the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver.
