Art & Hockey Exhibition At St. Lawrence's Brush Gallery
CANTON - An exhibition called "Game On! Art & Hockey," curated by Associate Professor of Art and History Kasarian Dane, will be in St. Lawrence University's Richard F. Brush Art Gallery from January 21 through March 5. It is open to the public, free of charge.
David E. Little, director and curator of photography and new media at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, will give a lecture in conjunction with the exhibition, on Monday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center. Little organized The Sports Show in 2012 at the Minneaplois Institute of Arts.
Dane states, "In the fall of 2009, I was passing through Toronto and happened to see Arena: The Art of Hockey, an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. By coincidence, I had just installed a group of my own hockey-themed paintings in a solo exhibition in Michigan. Based on the traditional team colors of the 1942-43 'Original Six' National Hockey League teams, the minimalist paintings on aluminum were a tribute to the Montréal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers. Shortly after returning home, I proposed a hockey-themed exhibition at St. Lawrence University, a school
with a rich hockey tradition through its NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs. Also, with the University's proximity to Canada, hockey has always been a major sport in the Canton community and surrounding area."
The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, videos and photographs by selected artists from Arena and by other contemporary artists. In addition, a hallway gallery exhibition features photographs and items from the Owen D. Young Library's Special Collections, the Canton Town and Village Historian, and other local collections that tell the stories of hockey and ice-skating in the North Country.
