BALINESE GAMELAN PERFORMERS TO APPEAR AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON – Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the renowned San Francisco ensemble dedicated 
to traditional and contemporary Balinese performing arts, will perform at 
St. Lawrence University on Saturday, October 4, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. 
The concert will feature some 25 musicians and dancers performing music on 
gamelan angklung, a set of instruments dominated by bronze percussion.  
      Directed by Wayne Vitale, Gamelan Sekar Jaya (www.gsj.org) strives to 
present the living traditions of Balinese arts with respect and integrity. 
Founded in 1979, the ensemble is now recognized internationally for the 
quality of its work and contributions to Balinese performing arts. 
      The group's guest music director is one of Bali's most highly regarded 
composers, Nyoman Windha. The concert will feature new compositions for 
gamelan and Western instruments by both Vitale and Windha. The event will 
also feature guest dance director Gusti Agung Ayu Warsiki, guest composer 
Jose Evangelista and a performance by pianist Eve Egoyan, of Toronto, 
of Evangelista's Nuevas monodias espanolas. 
	Along with lectures and demonstrations at St. Lawrence and Canton 
Central School, Gamelan Sekar Jaya will also host a workshop, at 4 p.m. 
on Saturday, October 4, also in Gulick Theatre; it is also open to the 
public, free of charge.
