CULTURAL, ETHNIC IDENTITY EXPLORED IN SLU GALLERY EXHIBITION

CANTON – "GAM: Poaching Dürer's Hare," an exhibition of work by artist Joel
Seah, will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery November 10 through December
13. Seah will give a performance on Tuesday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the
gallery, followed by a reception. It is open to the public, free of charge.
Seah was raised in Singapore in a Chinese family that valued occidental
thought, and his work, which deals with ideas about displacement and bi-cultural
dialogue, reflects this heritage. Trained as a printmaker, he is drawn to a
multi-disciplinary practice that utilizes performance, installation, photography,
video and sculpture to try to rediscover "what it means to be Chinese today."
His work has been shown in Birmingham, Alabama, where he received his B.F.A.
at the University of Alabama, as well as in Singapore, Melbourne and Toronto.
He is currently a second-year M.F.A. candidate in printmaking at Syracuse
University.
In "Poaching Dürer's Hare," 1,000 tracings of a color Xerox of Albrecht
Dürer's A Young Hare are exhibited, each copy a tracing of the one before it.
"GAM" is Seah's "commentary on a contemporary form of Orientalism wherein
North American Gay White Males (GWMs) [use the Internet to] seek...Gay Asian
Males (GAMs)." By exploring themes of desire for the exotic "other," he maps
the intersections of sex, racism and sexuality.
