SLU's Brush Gallery Hosting Two Exhibitions Related To US Wars

CANTON - The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University will host exhibitions beginning January 23 that present diverse perspectives on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Bearing Witness: Daniel Heyman," on exhibition through February 29, is a collection of works by Heyman, an artist who witnessed interviews of over 40 former detainees of Abu Ghraib Prison. The works in the exhibition combine Heyman's drawings of those interviewed with verbatim transcripts of their testimony. Los Angeles Times journalist Christopher Knight writes of Heyman's work, "Portraiture has always meant to cobble together the mysterious elements of individual human identity into a momentary whole. Torture, by contrast, means to rip humanity asunder."

In 2011, the Brush Gallery purchased a copy of Heyman's Istanbul Portfolio of the Abu Ghraib Detainee Interview Project for the University's permanent collection. Comprised of 10 drypoint etchings, the portfolio is one in an edition of 12, with others in collections at the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library.

Heyman will give a talk on the exhibition, on Monday, February 6, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the public, free of charge.

Through March 9, an exhibition called "Oversized & Underpriced" will also be in the gallery. Since 2008, "Oversized & Underpriced" exhibitions have brought together more than 60 international street artists who have created one-of-a-kind paintings, prints and drawings on enlarged German Päckchen and U.S. Postal Service mailing labels. Initiated by Oliver Baudach, of Hatch Kingdom in Berlin, "Oversized & Underpriced" has served in part as a benefit charity auction for Skateistan, a Kabul-based non-governmental organization (NGO) skateboarding school and climbing wall for boys and girls in Afghanistan. The exhibition also includes children's drawings of an "ideal Kabul" and documentary photographs of Skateistan's indoor skate park, which is used by over 360 students every week.
