ADIRONDACK ARTISTS FEATURED IN BRUSH GALLERY AT SLU

CANTON -- The work of two artists based in the Adirondacks forms
the basis of the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery exhibition
"Reconsidering Nature: Amanda Means and Frank Owen," which will
be on display October 21 through December 10. The exhibition is
curated by noted photographer Nathan Farb, who often uses Adirondack
nature scenes as the subject of his work.
Owen will give a public slide lecture on Thursday, November 4,
and Means will give a public slide lecture on Wednesday, November 10;
both events will be in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center at 4:30 p.m.
Means' photographs are taken by placing flowers directly in
a photographic enlarger, allowing light to pass through both the lens
and the flower to the surface of the photographic paper. She says,
"This is a different kind of light than the reflected light used by
cameras containing film. The light of my photographs seems to emanate
from the image itself, in much the same way as the light that comes
from within the accumulations of paint in a painting."
She has exhibited her work in group and one-person shows
throughout the U.S., Canada and England, and pieces are in a number
of private, corporate and museum collections. Means is also a
professional photographer, specializing in large-format works, and
a contributing editor of BOMB magazine.
Owen described his paintings as "matrices of visual and physical
events that occur in layers and varying scales, utilizing juxtapositions
and overlays of painted and photographic images." One of the pieces in
the exhibition, "Floor of the Forest," was created in 1990, "in
response to the regional uproar that ensued following the publication
of the recommendations of the 21st Century Commission on the
Adirondacks," according to Owen, who adds that he "covered the
events...like a reporter, attending and photographing the meetings,
conferences, rallies, protests and hearings of all parties."
