FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT SLU PITCH IN FOR COMMUNITY

CANTON -- Charitable organizations in the Canton community have
benefited from activities undertaken this year by St. Lawrence
University's First-Year Council -- a group of 32 representatives
elected by members of the first-year class.
In the fall, the Council sponsored a "change drive," with
students donating their "spare change." That initiative generated
$460, donated to the Canton Church and Community Worker Program to
assist with providing Thanksgiving meals to needy families. In
December, the Council sponsored a semi-formal dance for first-year
students; those attending were asked to donate canned goods and money,
resulting in the collection of over 200 cans of food and $100. That
event also benefited the Canton Church and Community Worker Program,
for the holidays.
For Valentine's Day in the spring semester, the Council sold
and delivered carnations, raising some $100, which they matched with
their own funds. The resulting $200 was donated to Hospice of the
St. Lawrence Valley.
Members of the Council are Melanie Adamsen, Moria Anderson,
Ruth Bagley-Ayres, Amy Barr, Mark Chapeskie, Don Evans, Geoff Faiella,
Elizabeth Fracchia, Jacky Gillis, Alexis Kostun, Jennifer Mascavage,
Johnna Nigh, Jeremy Powers, Sara Rademacher, Erica Roach, Alissa
Schneider, Thomas Scott, Duke Szymanski, Drew White, Michael Williams
and A.J. Wright; Residential Coordinator Jennifer Lewitas is the
Council's supervisor.
