TALK AT SLU EXAMINES LIFE OF COMPOSER RICHARD RODGERS

CANTON - "Thou Swell, Thou Witty" is the title of a lecture by
University of North Carolina at Wilmington Professor Philip Furia,
on the life of composer Richard Rodgers, to take place at
St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m.
in Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event, part
of a series celebrating the centennial of Rodgers' birth, is
open to the public, free of charge.
Among Furia's books on American popular music is The
Poets of Tin Pan Alley: A History of America's Great Lyricists,
1900-1950. He has also written biographies of Irving Berlin and
Ira Gershwin, and is at work on a book about songwriter Johnny
Mercer. Furia has also written on American songwriters for In
Theater, The American Scholar, and other magazines, and done
liner notes for a number of albums issued by Concord Jazz and
other labels.
Rodgers (1902-1979) was a prolific songwriter, best
known for collaborating with lyricists Oscar Hammerstein II and
Lorenz Hart on some of the best-loved musicals for theatre and
screen. The Special Productions Ensemble at St. Lawrence, which
each year selects a theme or type of music upon which to
concentrate, this year is focusing on the work of Rodgers.
The celebration will culminate in the ensemble's public
performance, on Thursday, November 21. Titled "The Blue Moon
Radio Hour," the performance will be held at 8 p.m. in the
Blackbox Theatre, Griffiths Arts Center.
