SLU PROFESSOR WINS COMMUNICATION AWARD

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of 
Speech and Theatre Kirk W. Fuoss was presented the 1999 Lilla 
A. Heston Award from the National Communication Association 
(NCA) at their recent annual meeting.
	The Heston Award is given to a scholar and creative 
artist whose work "reflects artistic passion, historical 
understanding, critical depth and theoretical sophistication."
	Fuoss was recognized for the quality of his published 
research and scholarship. His 1997 book Striking Performances 
is considered to be ground-breaking in terms of the politics 
of performance, performance historiography and performance in 
everyday life. Fuoss has published numerous essays, including 
the recent "Lynching Performances: Theatres of Violence," 
which won the NCA's Performance Studies Division top paper 
award and was published in the January 1999 issue of Text and 
Performance Quarterly.
	A member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1989, Fuoss 
is a graduate of Baylor University, with a master's degree from 
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Ph.D. from 
Louisiana State University. He will give the Piskor Lecture on 
campus in the spring.
