Inauguration Of St. Lawrence University President William L. Fox October 24
CANTON - St. Lawrence University will hold a series of events for the Inauguration of William L. Fox as its 18th president October 21 through 25 on campus, with the theme "Celebrate the Authentic St. Lawrence Experience."
Fox began his presidency July 1, 2009. The Inauguration events include a formal installation ceremony on Saturday, October 24.
Events include:
- A talk on Wednesday, October 21, by the Reverend Peter J. Gomes, of Harvard University, on the topic "What Dare We Expect?" The Kathryn Fraser Mackay Lecture and part of the Contemporary Issues Forum event will be at 7:30 p.m. in Eben Holden Center and is open to the public, free of charge.
- An organ recital, of "Music for an Inauguration," by Sondra Goldsmith Proctor on Friday, October 23, at 12:15 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and those attending are encouraged to bring lunch to enjoy while listening to the performance.
- A seminar series on the theme of Civil Rights and Social Justice, and featuring St. Lawrence faculty, alumni and students, will be held on Friday, October, 23. Panel discussions on Science and Justice (Carnegie 10), The Cosmology of Jug Band (The Underground, Noble Center) and Community Partners: SLU and North Country Correctional Facilities
(Richardson 15) will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. From 2:45 to 4:15 p.m., panel discussions on Gender Studies, Sexuality and the Law (Carnegie 10), Planning for Peace and Justice
(Richardson 15) and Access and Equity in Higher Education (The Underground, Noble Center) will be held. More information about each is available on the University's Inauguration Web site, http://www.stlawu.edu/inauguration09/schedule.html, and all are open to the public, free of charge.
- A showcase of student performances, "SLU"s Got Talent!," will be held on Friday, October 23, at 9 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. Admission is free, but tickets - available at the information desk of the Sullivan Student Center - are required.
- The Inauguration Ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Due to seating limitations, tickets are required for the event.
- Nik and the Nice Guys, a high-energy band that began at St. Lawrence in the 70's will perform on Saturday, October 24, at 9:30 p.m. in Leithead Field House. Admission is free, but tickets - available at the information desk of the Sullivan Student Center - are required.
Fox, a 1975 graduate of St. Lawrence, served as president and senior lecturer in philosophy, religion and history at Culver-Stockton College for six years. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University in 1978 and the Ph.D. in American religious history from George Washington University in 1989.
As a scholar, Fox has published three books: a study of Harvard theologian Willard L. Sperry (1991), the award-winning Valley of the Craftsmen (2001) and Lodge of the Double-Headed Eagle: Two Centuries of Scottish Rite Freemasonry (1999). He was also the founding and general editor of a 10-volume book series in church history. At Culver-Stockton, he developed a 10-year "Plan for Success" that generated a new master plan for campus facilities, major capital improvements, innovative curricular revision, an entrepreneurial online program and overall financial equilibrium. As special assistant to the president at Goucher College, he focused on strategic planning, advancement and graduate programs; he also led the enrollment management area for two successive years of growth. Previously, he taught at Claremont Theological School, Montgomery College, Howard University and Goucher College.
