SLU TO PRESENT COMEDIC PLAY 'FORTINBRAS'

CANTON - Described as "taking up where Shakespeare's Hamlet left
off," the comedy Fortinbras, by Lee Blessing, will be performed
at St. Lawrence University Wednesday through Saturday, April 2
through 5, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. Performances are open
to the public, free of charge.
Chosen by Time Magazine as one of the year's 10 best
plays when it premiered in 1991, Fortinbras has been called a
"metaphysical farce" by playwright Blessing. Written in the
spirit of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, the play
creates a comic re-visioning of a minor character in Shakespeare's
classic, a character referred to as his probable heir by
Hamlet himself but who, in fact, is often cut from productions
of Hamlet altogether. Blessing's young Fortinbras is a modern
man of action who encounters an unbelievable situation (the
murders in Elsinore and his sudden elevation to king), an army
out of control, seductive and otherwise troublesome ghosts,
and other incredible challenges as he tries to rule his new
kingdom and to create a new "truth" about the story of Prince
Hamlet.
The production is directed by Associate Professor of
Speech and Theatre Rebecca Daniels. Other production personnel
include guest artist Molly Eness, scenic design; guest artist
Linda Kelley-Dodd, costume design; John Larrance, lighting
design/scenic production; Scott Laurin, sound design; Paul
Talaga, special effects; guest artist Jim Robinson, fight
choreography; and Anne Harrigan, stage manager.
