SLU HOSTS FILM, DISCUSSIONS ON RELIGION AND HOMOSEXUALITY
CANTON - Filmmaker Daniel Karslake will be at St. Lawrence University November
13 and 14, for two discussions on and screenings of his award-winning documentary
For The Bible Tells Me So, which explores the many facets of the current national
conversation regarding the rift between religion and homosexuality - religious,
scientific or cultural.
The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, and Wednesday,
November 14, in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall, Room 218. On Tuesday,
November 13, Karslake will speak following the screening, and answer
questions from those in attendance. On Wednesday, November 14, a panel
of students, faculty, staff and community members will offer responses
to the film following the screening. All events are open to the public,
free of charge.
Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle International
Film Festival, For The Bible Tells Me So "brilliantly reconciles homosexuality
and Biblical scripture, and in the process reveals that Church-sanctioned
anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a significant (and often malicious)
misinterpretation of the Bible." As the film notes, most Christians live
their lives today without feeling obliged to kill anyone who works on the
Sabbath or eats shrimp (as a literal reading of scripture dictates). Through
the experiences of five families, including those of former House Majority
Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian Bishop Gene Robinson, the film
portrays how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a
gay child.
Karslake has been an award-winning producer for the newsmagazine "In
the Life," which airs nationally on PBS. Recognition for his outstanding
work for the show, which has centered primarily on issues regarding
religion and homosexuality, includes an Emmy nomination from the Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences, as well as praise from GLAAD and the
National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
