A List 10/15/01 VOICE, FORTEPIANO RECITAL AND WORKSHOP OFFERED AT SLU CANTON - A recital of music by Schubert for voice and fortepiano will be presented at St. Lawrence University by Gretchen Bence Young Artist Andrea Folan, soprano, and Kristian Bezuidenhout, fortepiano, on Sunday, October 21, at 4 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event is open to the public, free of charge. The program will be an afternoon of Schubert songs and smaller piano works performed with an early music twist. Instead of using the nine-foot modern Steinway Grand, Bezuidenhout will play a reproduction of a fortepiano, an early piano that Schubert would have played, and which produces softer and - some might argue - more subtle, elegant and colorful sounds than its louder descendents. Bezuidenhout and Folan will also give a lecture/demonstration on the fortepiano and song accompaniment, on Saturday, October 20, at 11 a.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall. The workshop will explore how these songs take on a different character when played on the earlier instrument. Participants can try their hand at the instrument and learn how they might be able to imitate fortepiano effects on the modern piano. Pre-registration is not required. Folan performs as a solo recitalist and chamber musician; in oratorio and opera performances; and with original instrument orchestras and contemporary ensembles. She is emerging as a leading specialist in the German Lied repertoire, and has appeared regularly both in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to her work with fortepiano, she has interpreted works from Hildegard von Bingen's chants to English lute songs and Landini to Handel. She performs with many Bach Festivals and with period ensembles and orchestras such as The Publick Musick, the Folger Consort, Apollo's Fire and the Genesee Baroque Players, and has appeared in concert at colleges throughout the northeastern United States. Bezuidenhout also performs on harpsichord and modern piano and has performed in the U.S., Europe and his native South Africa as a recitalist and chamber musician. Earlier this year, he was awarded First Prize and the Audience Prize in the 38th Festival of Flanders International Fortepiano Competition, a double honor, this being only the third time the prize has been awarded in the history of the competition. Bezuidenhout graduated from the Eastman School of Music, and while a student there, formed Le Nuove Musiche, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of classical literature in an historically informed manner. He also released this year his debut CD for the New York label Fleur de Son, entitled Sturm und Drang, featuring music by Mozart. The Young Artists Series was established by contributions from the family and friends of Gretchen Bence, a 1950 graduate of St. Lawrence and a professional opera singer, following her receipt of an honorary degree from St. Lawrence in 1985.
