ST. LAWRENCE RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW TRACK FACILITY

CANTON - St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $400,000 grant
from the France-Merrick Foundation to support construction of a new
outdoor track facility. The grant award is part of St. Lawrence's
Advantage 2000 initiative, supporting a renewed commitment to athletic,
recreation and fitness opportunities for today's and tomorrow's
University students.
Construction has begun on the 400-meter, nine-lane synthetic-surface
outdoor track, which will surround a rebuilt natural-turf football field.
The new track will enable the University to provide facilities for men's
and women's track teams to practice, and to host regional, state and national
track tournaments, which St. Lawrence's present facilities do not. Area and
regional high schools may also have opportunities to host tournaments at the
new facility, part of a large-scale upgrade of the University's total athletic
and recreational facilities. It is expected that the new track will be completed
for use in the fall.
"I am very grateful for the support of the France-Merrick Foundation
in improving our facilities for athletics and recreation," St. Lawrence President
Daniel F. Sullivan said. "I firmly believe that excellence in a liberal arts
education is achieved through balancing rigorous academic work with athletic
activity of all sorts: intercollegiate, intramural, recreational and fitness.
This gift will help us to achieve that goal."
The France-Merrick Foundation is a family foundation located in Baltimore,
Maryland. In 1987, the Foundation awarded St. Lawrence a grant of $100,000, to
endow a professional development fund for athletics faculty and coaching staff.
