A List 10/8/01 WOODEN-FLUTE PERFORMER TO GIVE SLU CONCERT CANTON - Chris Norman, a performer on the wooden flute, will give a concert on Monday, October 15, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge. The program will include traditional music from Maritime Canada and Scotland, plus some original compositions by Norman. Also performing will be Norman's partner, Robin Bullock, on guitar and cittern. Two local musicians, Laura Rediehs and Chris Neurath, will join the artists in the performance of a piece written by an 18th-century Scottish composer. A member of The Baltimore Consort, the international folk-music trio Helicon and the Celtic-fusion group Skyedance, Norman is known for his "expressive playing, engaging personality and breadth of repertoire that encompasses Canadian, Scottish and Irish traditional music." His flute-playing is featured on the soundtrack of the 1997 film Titanic, and his CD on the Dorian label, Man With The Wooden Flute, made the Billboard crossover charts for 12 weeks. Norman and Bullock will also offer a free workshop in traditional music, on Sunday, October 14, at 6 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall. Performers on any melody instrument - traditional or "concert" - or any plucked string instrument are welcome as players/participants. Participation is limited to 25 people; to register, contact Alice Hessert by phone (315-229-5173), e-mail (ahessert@stlawu.edu) or mail (Music Department, St. Lawrence University, 23 Romoda Drive, Canton, NY 13617). Registrants should include their name, phone number, mailing address, e-mail address and the instrument they will play during the workshop. Those interested in traditional music may also attend the workshop as observers and listeners. The two events are supported at St. Lawrence by the Birdsong Endowment for the Arts and co-sponsored by Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY).-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
