ST. LAWRENCE TO OFFER MINOR IN FILM STUDIES

CANTON - St. Lawrence University will offer a new minor, in film
studies, beginning in the spring 2003 semester.
Coordinated by Associate Professor of Modern Languages
and Literatures Roy C. Caldwell, the program will include required
courses in film studies (Introduction to Film Studies, History
of the Cinema, Seminar on Film Theory) plus courses taught in the
English, modern languages, history, philosophy, sociology and
gender studies programs and departments.
"The cultural impact of cinema has by no means been
limited to the zones of popular culture," Caldwell says. "From
the beginning, moving pictures generated important cultural debate
and theoretical writing. At present, St. Lawrence does not offer
any organized course of study in this important and growing
discipline, but the demand for such a program clearly exists
among our students."
Caldwell added that future course offerings will likely
include the music department and the First-Year Program.
