SLU Lecture To Focus On Caspian Oil

CANTON - Christopher Kendall, emeritus professor of geological sciences and the marine science program at the University of South Carolina, will deliver the Susan Caroline Ferguson Memorial Lecture in Geology at St. Lawrence University on Thursday, October 30, at 8 p.m. in Bloomer Auditorium, Brown Hall. The title of the lecture is "The Caspian Oil Province: A Continuing Loadstone to the West's Imperial Interest in Hydrocarbons," and it is open to the public, free of charge.

Kendall's research focuses on carbonate and clastic facies; sequence stratigraphy; seismic facies analysis; petrophysics of carbonates; and modeling of sedimentary systems in the Middle East, Gulf of Mexico and West Texas. He is the author or co-author of many scientific publications.

Of his talk, he says, "More than 85 million barrels of oil are consumed per day around the world. Confrontations exist among the nations within whose borders the reserves lie, as well as between those nations and nations in the West. Russia controls these outlets and the U.S. is trying to bypass this grip. This has led to ongoing deterioration in the Western relationship with Russia."

The Susan Caroline Ferguson Memorial Lecture Fund was established in 1982 by her family and friends to bring exceptional geoscientists to campus each academic year to present a lecture on topics of regional, national and international interest.
