NEW PROGRAM SUPPORTS STUDENT/FACULTY PROJECTS AT SLU

CANTON - St. Lawrence University students no longer will have to forego
collaborating with faculty on projects because they must return home for
summer jobs.
The St. Lawrence University Fellows Program has been created to
support collaborative faculty-student work prior to a student's senior year,
releasing students from the economic need to work during the summer, according
to Vice President of the University and Dean of Academic Affairs Thomas B.
Coburn. A pilot version of the program will begin this summer.
"The program is designed to allow students to pursue an independent
project under the close tutelage of a faculty mentor when both of them have
more time to devote exclusively to the project, most especially during the
summer," Coburn says. "Projects can be undertaken as independent research or
a creative artistic endeavor. They can be completed on-campus or off.
Interdisciplinary projects are especially encouraged."
Coburn adds that the projects normally supported by the program will
not be credit-bearing, but it is hoped that they will "lay the foundation for
credit-bearing work to be accomplished later in a student's academic career at
St. Lawrence. It promises to add an exciting new dimension to our learning
together."
Students must apply to participate in the program, and have the endorsement of
the faculty member they plan to work with as well as an additional recommendation
from a member of the faculty.
