TOM FAY BASEBALL FIELD AT SLU TO BE DEDICATED SEPT. 21

CANTON - Tom Fay Baseball Field at St. Lawrence University will
be formally dedicated in a ceremony to be held Saturday, September
21, at 3 p.m. President Daniel F. Sullivan will offer remarks, and
Fay, head baseball coach, and members of the baseball team will be
present. The event, part of Laurentian Leadership Weekend, is open
to the public.
Constructed in 2001, the new field was made possible with a
gift from University Trustee Jay Ireland and his wife, Valerie
Lanigan Ireland, both members of the Class of 1977. They, along with
donors Theodore '48 and Jill Rosen; Vincent '84 and Linda Pacilio;
Kirk '78 and Heather Dempsey; James Robison '72; David Wiederecht '78
and Barbara Williams Wiederecht '77, in consultation with the
University, chose to honor Fay by naming the field for him.
President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "As a former St. Lawrence
baseball player myself, I deeply appreciate the impact our new
field will have on baseball here. Having it named for one of the
great Division III coaches, Tom Fay, funded by alumni who played
for him, and spouses - it just doesn't get any better than that,
for Tom and for St. Lawrence."
Fay, professor of sport studies and exercise science, began
his career at St. Lawrence in 1972. A graduate of Ithaca College,
where he was a three-sport athlete, he earned his master's degree
at St. Lawrence and the Ph.D. from Boston University in 1982. Fay
has produced six conference championships and has taken the Saints
to the ECAC tournament twice and the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) tournament once during the 1990's. The
all-time win leader in St. Lawrence baseball coaching history, he
has had nearly 400 victories to date throughout his career. In
addition, Fay has been active in organizations promoting physical
education in New York State and with the NCAA.
