PHOTOGRAPHER FARB'S 'SUMMER OF LOVE' AT SLU
CANTON - "Summer of Love: A Photographer's Journal," an exhibition of early works
by famed Adirondack photographer Nathan Farb, will be on exhibition in the Richard
F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from January 25 through March 14.
A slide lecture and discussion with Farb will be held on Tuesday, February 20, at
7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center; it is open to the public, free of
charge.
Farb states, "As a young photographer, I went to [New York's] Lower East Side in
1965 and for three years documented activities and events in the streets, in
people's apartments, and in the park. Through friends, I was able to meet and
photograph Diane Arbus, Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, and Viva, as well
as other hippies, musicians and performers, social activists, and protesters...
I was too young to be a beatnik - they were mostly gone by the time I got there - and
I was too old to be a hippie. I was, however, just the right age for the emerging
New Journalism, and I enthusiastically embraced the idea of being both observer
and participant...In retrospect, I can see that I was trying to do several things
simultaneously...This exhibition is a journal about becoming a photographer.
As the gurus would say, 'The Summer of Love' and my birth as a photographer
seemed auspiciously congruent."
The recipient of an honorary degree from St. Lawrence in 1999, Farb is widely
recognized as one of the premier outdoor photographers working today, and the
Adirondacks have been one of the principal subjects of his photographs. His work appears
regularly in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Adirondack Life and Conde
Nast Traveler, among other publications.
The exhibition is supported by the Carlyle and Betty Barnes Endowment Fund and the
Owen D. Young Library. On Monday-Wednesday, February 19-21, Farb will conduct
a digital photography workshop with Faye Serio's Photo II and Advanced Photography
students, with support from the Newell Center for Arts Technology and the
Jeanne Scribner Cashin Endowment Fund.
