Community Members Welcome In St. Lawrence Music Ensembles

CANTON - Membership in several of St. Lawrence University's music ensembles is open to the community.

The University Chorus is Canton's community chorus. This fall's concert will feature the Requiem by French composer Gabriel Fauré, performed using his original orchestration, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Toward the Unknown Region. Concerts will be on Saturday, November 15, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 16, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. University Chorus also performs at the annual Candlelight Services on Wednesday, December 10, at 7 and 9 p.m. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Herring-Cole Hall. Auditions are by appointment until Friday, September 5. Contact Barry Torres, 315-229-5171, or btorres@stlawu.edu to set up a time.

The Early Music Singers is a select chamber choir that specializes in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque a cappella music. Membership includes faculty, staff, students and community members; sight-reading ability is required. Rehearsals for the Early Music Singers are on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. This fall, the Singers will perform an entire Requiem Mass in Latin on All Soul's Day, Sunday, November 2, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The String Orchestra is directed by Chris Hosmer and rehearses on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Underground, Noble Center 001. The fall concert will be on Sunday, December 7, in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. For information, contact Hosmer, at cello@twcny.rr.com.

Concert Band will be directed by Glenn Roberts; rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Underground, Noble Center 001. This fall's concert, which will be on Saturday, December 6, at 8 p.m. in Eben Holden, will feature world musics from Africa, Latin America and the British Isles. Woodwind and percussion players are especially welcome. For membership information, contact Roberts at glenn_roberts@mac.com.
