A List 8/20/01 SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES OPEN TO COMMUNITY CANTON - The St. Lawrence University music department offers several ensembles whose membership is open to the community. University Chorus, the Early Music Players and the Early Music Singers are accepting new members for the Fall 2001 semester. All interested singers and instrumentalists should contact Director of Music Ensembles Barry Torres, at 229-5171, or btorres@stlawu.edu for membership information. Thanksgiving will be the theme of the University Chorus concerts to be presented on Friday, November 9, and Sunday, November 11. Bach, Handel and Billings will be the featured composers. The Chorus also sings in the annual Candlelight Service, to be held this year on Wednesday, December 12. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 15 in Griffiths Arts Center. Music of medieval and Renaissance Spain will be the focus of the Early Music Ensemble, including some Christmas villancicos and the Cantigas de Santa Maria from the court of Alfonso the Wise, King of Castile and Léon from 1252 to 1284. The Players rehearse on Mondays at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall; Singers meet on Thursdays in Gunnison Chapel, also at 7 p.m. A wide variety of early instruments from the Romer Collection, including recorders, crumhorns, harp, organetto, lute, viols, shawms and harpsichord are used by members. No previous experience on these instruments is required; however, a good working knowledge of modern strings, winds or keyboards is a plus.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
