SLU BOARD ELECTS NEW TRUSTEE

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees, at
its fall meeting on October 9, elected Janet Hatfield Legro,
of Charlottesville, Virginia, as a trustee, for a term that
will begin on July 1, 2000. A 1985 graduate of St. Lawrence,
Legro is the minister of Mt. Olivet United Church of Christ
in Charlottesville.
She earned the master of divinity degree from Harvard
University in 1989 and has been at the Mt. Olivet United Church
of Christ since 1998. Legro majored in government and religious
studies at St. Lawrence, and while a student was a member of
Delta Delta Delta sorority, the ski team and the government
honorary society. As an alumna, she has been a planning chair
for Reunion, as well as a career advisor. In 1988, Legro served
as interim chaplain at St. Lawrence, while Chaplain Ted Linn
was on sabbatical leave.
The Board also approved releasing $300,000 to the Village
of Canton to be used for improving parking downtown. The funds
are part of an agreement between the University and the village
that included the discontinuance of Leigh Street, so that that
property may be used by the University in its renovation and
upgrade of athletics and recreation facilities. In addition,
the Board of Trustees approved releasing an additional $40,000
to the village, to be used for improvements to Maple Street,
which runs parallel to Leigh Street, in anticipation of
increased traffic on Maple Street.
Both of these items have been considered and approved
by village officials.
