Community Members Welcome In St. Lawrence University Music Ensembles

CANTON - Membership in several of St. Lawrence University's music ensembles is open to the community.

The University Chorus is Canton's community chorus. The fall concert will feature Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in the composer's arrangement for two pianos and percussion. The concert will be on Saturday, November 13, at 8 p.m. in the new Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall in Griffiths Arts Center. The University Chorus also sings for the annual Candlelight Services in Gunnison Memorial Chapel, this year on Wednesday, December 8, at 7 and 9 p.m. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Griffiths Room 15; the first rehearsal is August 31.

The Early Music Singers is a select chamber choir that specializes in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque a cappella music. Membership includes faculty, staff, students and community members; sight-reading ability is required. Rehearsals for the Early Music Singers are on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. This fall, the Singers will present music by the 16th-century composers Palestrina, Lasso, Victoria and Byrd. Concert date is set for Sunday, November 7, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel; the first rehearsal is August 30.

The String Orchestra is directed by Chris Hosmer, and rehearses on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall. This fall the String Orchestra will perform "String Music from the 20th Century and Beyond," featuring music from contemporary composers, including Northern New York composers as well as St. Lawrence graduates, on Sunday, December 5, at 2 p.m. in the Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall. The Alexander String Quartet will work with the orchestra during their residency, on September 22. The first rehearsal is September 1. Contact Hosmer for more information at cello@twcny.rr.com.

The Wind Ensemble, directed by Michael Farley, explores American band music from 1900 to 1930, including rags and marches to early jazz. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Underground, Noble Center 001. Concert date is on Thursday, November 18, at 8 p.m. in the Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall.
