Community Members Welcome In St. Lawrence Music Ensembles

CANTON - Membership in several of St. Lawrence University's music ensembles is open to the community.

The University Chorus is Canton's community chorus. This fall's concert features the music of Gustav Holst (The Hymn of Jesus) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (A Song of Thanksgiving), performed with full orchestra. Concert dates are Friday, November 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, at 4 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The University Chorus also sings for the annual Candlelight Services, this year on Wednesday, December 9, at 7 and 9 p.m. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Underground, Noble University Center; first rehearsal is September 1. The Early Music Singers is a select chamber choir that specializes in medieval, Renaissance and Baroque a cappella music. Membership includes faculty, staff, students and community members; sight-reading ability is required. Rehearsals for the Early Music Singers are on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. This fall, the Singers will present settings of the Salve Regina by Ockeghem, DesPrez, Morales and Lasso. For membership information, contact Torres, at 315-229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu.

The String Orchestra is directed by Chris Hosmer and rehearses on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Underground, Noble Center 001. This fall, the String Orchestra will combine with University Chorus, playing the music of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams, and will work with the Alexander String Quartet in rehearsal during their fall residency, September 17. The first rehearsal is September 10; auditions are Thursday, September 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. in The Underground. Contact Hosmer for more information at cello@twcny.rr.com.

Concert Band will be directed by Glenn Roberts; rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Underground, Noble Center 001. This fall's concert will be on Sunday, November 15, at 2 p.m. in Gulick Theatre, featuring music of David Holsinger, Percy Grainger, W. Francis McBeth and Howard Hanson. Woodwind and percussion players are especially welcome. An informational meeting will be held on Monday, August 31, at 6 p.m. in the Underground; audition times will be announced at that time.
