MUSIC ENSEMBLES AT ST. LAWRENCE OPEN TO COMMUNITY
CANTON - Membership in several of St. Lawrence University's music ensembles are open to
membership in the community.
Auditions for the University Chorus and Early Music Singers will be held Monday
through Thursday, August 28 through 31, from 7 to 10 p.m. in Room 15 of the Griffiths
Arts Center, and by appointment until Tuesday, September 2, for the University Chorus
and Thursday, September 7, for the Early Music Singers. For information, contact
Barry Torres, at 315-229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu.
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus of 50 to 60 voices, combines the
vocal talents of students, faculty, staff and community members and performs a
varied repertoire, often with orchestral accompaniment. Rehearsals are Tuesdays
from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center. This fall's concert will
feature 20th-century Christmas music, including John Rutter's Gloria and Flor
Peeters' Festival Entrada, both accompanied by brass choir, along with Franz Biebl's
beloved Ave Maria. The University Chorus also sings in the annual Candlelight
Service in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Tenors and basses are especially welcome
to audition.
The Early Music Singers is a highly select vocal ensemble of 16 to 20 singers that
specializes in the great vocal music of the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Membership includes faculty, staff students and community members. Rehearsals are
completely a cappella (sight reading is a must) and appropriate vocal practices including
just intonaton are explored in the beautifully authentic-style acoustics of Gunnison
Memorial Chapel. The focus this fall will be 17th- and 18th-century Christmas music
from the New (America and Canada) and Old Worlds. Rehearsals for the Early Music
Singers are on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.
The String Orchestra, a 30-member string chamber orchestra made up of violins,
violas, cellos and basses, includes University students and staff, but is also open
to local community musicians and students as well. An informal audition is required
for membership, and violinists are rotated by the semester in three sections. This
semester's challenging program will be devoted to J.S. Bach. The orchestra
rehearses on Thursdays, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Gilbert Recital Hall. Auditions
will be Thursday, August 31, and Monday, September 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in
Room 16 of Griffiths Arts Center. Requirements for the audition include scales,
sight-reading and a prepared piece, if possible. For information, contact Chris
Hosmer, at 315-386-1127 or cello@twcny.rr.com.

as qualified area musicians. Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 to 9 p.m.,
in the Underground, Noble Center. Auditions will be held in the Underground

music as its focus each semester or year, and is open to guitarists, bassists,
percussionists and keyboard players, along with wind and brass players and
singers as needed. This year will be devoted to the Motown sound of the 60's
and 70's. The ensemble rehearses Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m.
