Exoo Picked As Top Prof By SLU's Senior Class

CANTON - Professor of Government Calvin F. Exoo is the recipient of the 2009 Owen D. Young Outstanding Faculty Award, as voted by members of the senior class. The award is the only one given to faculty that is chosen by students.

Each year, graduating seniors at St. Lawrence vote to determine the award-winner, who delivers the "last lecture" for the class during the week prior to Commencement.

Exoo is a specialist in the politics of the mass media. He is the author of the books Democracy Upside Down: Public Opinion and Cultural Hegemony in the United States and of The Politics of the Mass Media. He spent a sabbatical year in Ireland, examining the impact of American media on European culture, and in 2006, was named the recipient of the Saul O. Sidore Lectureship Award by Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire.

He is at work on a new book, Media 9/11: How the Press Led Us Into War, and Why, to be published by Sage Publications. A graduate of Calvin College, with a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Exoo has been on the St. Lawrence faculty since 1978.
