17th-CENTURY FRENCH MUSIC TO BE PERFORMED BY SLU GROUP

CANTON - Ensemble St. Laurent, a faculty-directed music ensemble
at St. Lawrence University, will perform an evening of music from
the court of Louis XIV on Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m. in Herring-Cole
Hall. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Directed by George Torres, the Ensemble will perform instrumental
and vocal airs by Lully, Gautier, Monteclair and Jacquet de la Guerre.
The ensemble specializes in the performance of 17th-century French music
and the repertoire consists of collections of instrumental music dance
suites for mixed ensembles as well as vocal selections from the repertoire
of airs de cour.
Each semester, the music department organizes one or more special
productions involving the preparation and performance of significant musical
works. The productions are planned to take into account students with special
talents in instrumental music and are part of an innovative ensemble program
that provides performance opportunities for St. Lawrence students and other
members of the community. Membership is by audition.
