PHYSICIAN'S ART WORK EXHIBITED AT SLU GALLERY

CANTON – "Doctor's Cuts: Prints by Eric Avery" will be exhibited in the
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from April 13
through June 7; a slide lecture by the artist, a physician/psychiatrist
working in the HIV and hepatitis clinics and hospital wards at the
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, will be given on
Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center.
The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Avery's art, primarily prints, explores issues such as human
rights abuses and social responses to disease (HIV and emerging infectious
diseases), death, sexuality and the body. He states, "My art/medicine
actions have given structural form to the liminal space between art and
medicine."
Over 30 years, Avery has had numerous solo exhibitions in the
United States and his prints are in many collections, including the
Library of Congress, Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the ARS
Medica Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts. In England, Avery's work is included in The Wellcome
Trust Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine.
