A List 1/27/03 SLU MUSIC ENSEMBLES OPEN TO COMMUNITY CANTON - St. Lawrence University's music department offers several ensembles whose membership is open to the community. The University Chorus and the Early Music Ensemble is accepting new members for the spring 2003 semester. The University Chorus numbers between 40 to 50 singers. Choruses from famous operas and operettas will be the repertoire for the spring concerts, to be presented on Saturday, April 12, and Sunday, April 13. The program will feature music of Verdi; Bizet; Borodin; Gilbert and Sullivan; and Herbert and Lehar, to name a few. Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 15 of the Griffiths Arts Center. Men are especially welcome to join. The Early Music Ensemble is comprised of three groups, the Early Music Players, the Early Music Strings and the Early Music Singers. Their repertoire is drawn from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods and is played on a wide variety of early instruments from the University's Romer Collection. This semester the ensemble will concentrate on music from the great Italian cities - Florence, Rome and Venice. The Players rehearse on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall. The Strings, a small Baroque orchestra, also meet on Mondays in Gilbert, at 8:30 p.m. The Singers rehearse and perform a cappella. Therefore, some sight-singing ability is a must; rehearsals are on Thursdays in Gunnison Memorial Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m. Two concerts are scheduled for the spring. The Early Music Strings will perform on Sunday, April 6, and the Players and Singers combine forces for a concert on Sunday, May 4. Auditions for the ensembles can be arranged by contacting Barry Torres at 315-229-5171 or btorres@stlawu.edu.-30- Back To News Releases
